Overweight America

"Some of the states with the highest rates of obesity are in the south, including Texas, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. We asked some of our health experts to weigh in on what is causing such an increase in obesity across the nation "There is mounting evidence that shows lack of access to healthy food is associated with obesity," says MSN Health & Fitness Nutrition Expert Keecha Harris. Harris is president of Harris and Associates, a food systems and public-health consulting firm based in Birmingham, Ala." (Taken from msn.health.com)

- I would love to blame the lack of access to unhealthy food for the obesity problem in America.

- It is easier to blame McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, or any other fast food joint for the fat riding on Americas hips.

The harsh reality is I as an American blame America for this epidemic. We are a land of the free. A land where any one with the right knowledge and education can make a decent living doing whatever he/she chooses. We teach our kids the value of education. We show them that you have to add X before Y. We educate kids on how to read, write, and do math.

What we do not do is educate kids on health. It is easy to stick them in front of the tube, or put a video game controller in their hand then to take them to the park. We don't go for bike rides, or hikes. We are so wrapped up in this busy hectic life we neglect our duties on proper education.

We teach kids to stay away from drugs. We let them know that smoking is bad, and drinking is bad. What we don't teach them is that the lack of exercise can be just as deadly.

America gets in a hurry and drives through fast food joints. That is there breakfast lunch and dinner. They buy snack foods, fast foods, microwaveable foods, and skip the "do it yourself" meal isle.

Don't get me wrong I am not hating on fast food joints. They have to make a living too. Matter of fact I think that the very first person to open a fast food joint was a genius. Yes I occasionally do the drive through, I am human, I enjoy a chicken sandwich and fries. I do that maybe once every three months.

The problem I see is America is so quick to blame McDonald's. "They should serve healthier foods." America you should eat healthier foods. Eating healthy is not an expensive habit. Our school systems have realized they are serving junk. The school systems have rewritten their menus, and some have hired professionals.

It cant stop there, we have to educate in our households. We need to stand up stop blaming everyone and blame ourselves. Every time you point your finger at someone, three on your hand is pointing back to you.

Health education should be taught in school. Yes schools have PE classes but when I went to school I did not get educated in those classes.

Parents should spend more up time with their kids than couch time. They should take an hour or two hours a day exercising, biking, walking, running, if it works up a sweat then do it. Parents need to turn the TV off, turn the Gameboy off, turn the Nintendo off, and open the front door. OK so your neighborhood is not safe, go some where that is safe, chase your children around the house for an hour. As parents we should get involved in our children's healthier lives. We should teach our kids the value of being healthy.

America I thought our national bird was a Bald Eagle, not a penguin.

If you don't have kids, then get off the couch go for a bike ride, a jog, a walk, a swim, or anything that is going to raise your heart beat and sweat. We need to stop blaming the lack of, or fast food joints, or unsafe neighborhoods, or whatever you think is causing you to have spare tires. The only reason America that we are overweight and obese, simply put.

We Are Lazy...
